Let me hear you!” That’s right, kiddies. I used to go to shows like that all the time, and it tickled me. It was funny.ģ) Also on the stage: A lot of random people just standing there, like the posse had spilled over from Happy Hour and just come up with him to keep the party going. I know he did the hardcore thing for a while, so maybe he saved all that stuff? I dunno. There’s something adorable about him simultaneously dealing in the way-back while being comfortable with where his life is now.Ģ) I didn’t quite get all the skulls, on a canopy on the stage and on the DJ’s mask. “I love it here!” he kept saying earnestly, citing that this was where he chose to live with his wife and kids. ![]() His show was arguably the most consistent set (more on that later), and full of quippy highlights…like these!ġ) He made it very clear that while he’ll always love Miami, his heart is in Palm Beach. In any other setting, there might be 20-somethings on hand to make us feel old, but with ringleader Ice, who capped off the four-hour nostalgia fest, everyone was in on the party. It was surreal to be at a place where 99 percent of the acts and the audience were in their 40s, where half the crowd seemed excited to hear about the after party and the other half had to scurry home to relieve their babysitters. Wellington’s Vanilla Ice was talking specifically about “Ninja Rap,” the peppy chant from 1991’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze,” which he was about to perform as the headliner at Friday night’s “Legends of the Old School” show at Mizner Park Amphitheater, a package affair co-starring along with Salt-N-Pepa, Stevie B., 2 Live Crew, Color Me Badd, Gucci Crew and various DJs.īut that was the unofficial theme of the evening, from the music, to the way the lady next to me in the cocktail line asked me “What year were you?” because almost everybody there graduated from high school in a year with an 8 or a 9 in it, to all the Wu-Tang Clan T-shirts and colorful ’90s drag. ![]()
